Take Care of Yourself
At PoshPorts we love to bring you information about living the the good life. Part of living the good life is staying healthy and taking care of yourself. Occasionally, no matter what we do, we find ourselves on the receiving end of a cold or flu which forces us to take some time off. If we take just a little time to care for ourselves every day we may reduce the amount of down time we'll have in our busy, busy lives. Here are a few suggestions that may help you stay in tip-top shape and avoid whatever may be going around.
Drink Plenty of Water. This recommendation is so simple, yet most of us our guilty of not paying attention to this one. Start the day with a full glass of water with a healthy squeeze of fresh lemon in it. Hydrating early is a great way to get off to a great start. Keeping a water bottle with you all the time also is a good reminder to keep drinking water throughout the day and is easy to fit into your schedule. Once you make it a habit, you'll wonder why you didn't do so before.
Wash Your Hands. There are a lot of germs floating around out there and no matter how hard you try, you're probably going to run into some of them at one time or another. Washing your hands regularly and keeping your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth will help keep these germs away and help you minimize your contact with them. If you keep a hand sanitizer with you all the time, you'll never be without a way to clean your hands, even if there's no water nearby. It's a small but worthwhile investment in your health.
Get Some Sleep. We're all busy trying to get as much as we can done every day. Technology makes us readily accessible 24 hours a day, which is both a blessing and a curse. If you absolutely can't get the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep a night try squeezing in a power nap in the afternoon. Even as little as a 20-minute snooze will give your brain a break so you can tackle the rest of the day. If you have appointments on your calendar, think about blocking out a half-hour or so during your day, close the door and let your mind relax. You'll provide your mind and body with a precious little gift that will pay dividends to your health bank account.
Eat 3 Squares. We love all the culinary indulgences that end up on our plates and in our stomachs, but too much of a good thing can make you sluggish and feeling lousy. Treat yourself once in awhile, but be sure that the majority of your daily food intake comes from nutrient-rich fruits, veggies and whole grains. Too busy to prepare a healthy meal? Have healthy portable snacks available, such as an apple, orange, mini-bag of carrots and celery or trail mix. To start your morning with a a quick smoothie fruits and vegetables like blueberries, strawberries, bananas, apples, carrots, spinach, kale, etc. You can add a scoop of greens powder or protein powder to amp it up. And, a quick tip - frozen fruits and veggies provide great nutrition, are available all year, and make your smoothie icy cold, which tastes great!
Move it. Spending way too much time sitting is now the new norm. At the desk or computer, in the car, at the tv, on the phone. Research shows that the body needs to move to be healthy and happy. If you have to work at a desk take frequent breaks to stretch to help eliminate stiffness and neck and back pain. It's also a good idea to clear your mind once in awhile by stepping away and getting some perspective. If you have to make a call use your cell phone and walk around, go outside and get some fresh air. There are even some treadmill desks that can keep you moving while you're doing your work. Why not?
